Pregnancy plans derailed by 2020? Have you considered Acupuncture?

COVID has, understandably, dominated the headlines in 2020.  But outside the hand washing, distancing and mask wearing, people still have plans.  And, for some, this may include having a baby.

Sadly, around 1 in 7 couples may have difficulty conceiving. And with NHS fertility services having been suspended for a period earlier this year, some of those plans may have been derailed.

I know that I’m blessed, having given birth to two beautiful daughters (now grown up) and I sympathise deeply with couples who find it difficult to conceive. The stress and anxiety can be upsetting to witness.  This is why I trained with (and am affiliated to) the renowned Zita West Fertility Clinic in London.

In my clinic, I routinely use the ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture which can help to restore the free flow of energy (Chi) throughout the body and unlock better mental and physical wellness. This whole-body centred and holistic approach can be used throughout the pregnancy journey:

  • Regulating the menstrual cycle
  • Improving blood circulation to the ovaries and uterus
  • Helping to manage stress
  • Giving a boost to natural fertility
  • Supporting fertility/IVF treatment
  • Helping with pregnancy symptoms

Not just a female problem

It’s important to remember that infertility affects both sexes. Sperm counts among western men have halved since the 1980s and are falling by around 1.4% a year with no definite cause. Even the World Health Organisation is baffled, describing current knowledge of male infertility as ‘very low’.  But some studies have shown that acupuncture brings about important changes in the quality and motility (movement) of sperm.

What to expect with Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles through your skin at strategic points on the body.  Obviously, the experience can be different for everyone, but the good news is that it’s not generally painful.

I use fine, single-use, pre-sterilised needles to stimulate specific acupuncture points on your legs and abdomen.  After the needles are inserted, I may leave you alone for 45 minutes to allow the needles to do their work. You can use this period for peaceful reflection or listen to music, so remember to bring your phone!

What my patients say

There are many studies that suggest that acupuncture may help in various areas relating to fertility, conception and pregnancy. I’ve been practising for 25 years and have worked with hundreds of patients on fertility issues.  During that time, I’ve had some lovely feedback from people who feel that acupuncture has contributed positively to their fertility journey.

These kind words are from Clare: “I initially went to see Denise as she is a Zita West affiliated acupuncturist and therefore has specific knowledge of how to boost fertility. I had seen other acupuncturists during the years I was trying to get pregnant but noticed straight away that Denise was different.

“She carefully tailored each treatment in relation to where I was in my monthly cycle and to how I was feeling on each visit. We underwent IVF treatment and saw Denise regularly throughout this, happily the treatment worked on our first attempt. Denise continued to treat me during the entirety of my pregnancy. I experienced back pain which was completely eliminated with her help and I generally felt well during the time I was pregnant with our twins.

“I would highly recommend Denise and much appreciate the assistance and support she gave during our fertility journey.”
